American Exbrat in São Paulo eBook Maggie Foxhole
Maggie Foxhole is quite obviously an experienced São Paulo-er. She writes confidently about a range of topics through the eyes of an American "exbrat". She has a great style; information mixed in with some fun anecdotes. Most importantly, she gives very useful tips. I loved her tip about the motoboys. She is not kidding -- watch out for motoboys! This book is aimed at foreigners moving to Brazil as expat contract hires. While it's very specific to that group of people, a large portion of the book is useful for any foreigner moving to São paulo for any amount of time. This is one of the few (if not the only) book(s) written by a foreigner living in Brazil for foreigners thinking about living in Brazil. If you fit that mould, this is as must-have.

American Exbrat in São Paulo eBook Maggie Foxhole Reviews
This book is a must buy for anyone planning to move to São Paulo, be it for a year or two or for a longer stay. The author touches on many aspects of the ex-pat experience here, and her advice, suggestions and explanations are all extremely useful. The book is a quick, relaxing read, and as someone who has relocated to Brazil, I found myself laughing along with Ms. Foxhole's humourous anecdotes. I definitely recommend this book.
I read this after visiting Brazil for the first time, where I had felt overwhelmed by the differences in everyday life. I was lucky to have family in Sao Paulo, who helped me over the initial challenges.
This book gave an accurate picture of the adjustments an American faces. I visited many of the places and faced the situations she mentions. I loved her humorous outlook and the many tips she gave about places to visit, foods to eat, and the positive aspects of this amazing city and country.
This book is right on. It takes away some of the mystery and surprise awaiting you on relocation here. I wish I had read this before packing my container. Good work!
Fabulous read for expats! Knowing Sao Paulo, after living there, made this book even better!
This guide is very complete, and at the same time refreshingly entertaining. If I would have had this book when moving to São Paulo 7 years ago, it would have saved me some gray hair... Instead it has become a great gift to my family back home, for them to understand this far away and different city that is now my home.
It is a very honest guide; it highlights and explains both negative and positive sides with São Paulo in a relaxed and helpful way. Maggie has managed to put words to things that I have struggled to explain. An extra plus is that the author is actually a great story teller, which makes the book a breeze to read!
I highly recommend this for anyone who is thinking of coming here, but also as an insightful book to share with relatives and friends who are curious about your new home.
It's a great book for those who are willing to move to Brazil. Even though it's mainly focused in São Paulo, foreigners may learn some aspects about the Brazilian culture in general, and be prepared to face some possible issues, especially the ones related to the bureaucracy.
The book highlights important aspects, the good and bad things, and what you have to be careful about. But in the end you'll see that Ms Foxhole prefers to face with humor and focus on the positive aspects of her adventure, showing what you can get when you decide to leave your comfort zone and embrace your new (or temporary) home.
The description about the crazy birthday parties and play dates are really funny, as the observations about plastic surgeries. Also, the chapter about employees (maids, nannies etc) are updated, with important information about the new law.
If you follow this guide you'll never be bothered on weekends and holidays, always having a place, park, or museum to visit.
Thank you, Ms Foxhole, for this honest portrait of São Paulo ). I'm looking forward to reading more books from you. You're an excellent writer.
As an expat who is in the process of moving to Brazil for the second time, I can honestly say I wish we had this book before we came the first time! And now, even though I've lived in the country before, it's still proving to be full of good information for us now that we're coming back.
As 'foreigners' who have lived here before I found myself constantly nodding my head while I was reading, agreeing with everything Maggie wrote, and often laughing out loud at the humor with which she wrote it. She is absolutely right in telling you that you need to hang on to your sense of humor when you are dealing with this complicated and confusing, and so often maddening culture!
The book is written with specific information about Sao Paulo, but the cultural, practical and finanacial advice is still usefull and very insightful for any part of Brazil. She touches on ways to make sure your transition and first year in the country can be made easier through understanding what's going on in Brazilian's heads (which can be such a mystery to those of us from the US or UK!), and reminds us of the importance to venture outside of our 'exbrat bubble'.
Her section on meetings and working with Brazilians was priceless! My husband confirms that all of it is precisely true, and had to spend a very hard first year or two learning that his Scottish mentality of hard work and punctuality just doesn't translate here. He has learned to 'go with the flow', but he still gets frustrated. Some days that sense of humor is harder to rely on than others! If he had read this book before arriving that first time, he would have saved himself so much metaphorical head-banging!
We also laughed through the section about birthday parties. We are still shocked by them! I don't think we'll ever get used to the outlandish, over the top, unnecessary, and incredibly expensive extravaganzas we've experienced for one, two and three year olds! When you read this part, you may not believe she's telling the truth, but there is not one word of exaggeration in her words.
Brilliant book, and a very good look into Sao Paulo and Brazil in general whether you're moving here, thinking about living here, or just curious. Maggie has written a very good book that can not only help your transition, but can help you see what so many of us have come to love about living here.
